How the Instagram algorithm works

Understand how Instagram decides who sees your posts.

Instagram – just like Facebook – belongs to the company Meta. This is why Instagram also works with an algorithm. An algorithm is a kind of rule set or automated system that decides which content users see. When you understand these rules, you can significantly improve your reach.

💡 Important: There is not just one single algorithm, but three different ones. Each one evaluates content slightly differently.

The three Instagram algorithms explained simply

1. Algorithm for Feed and Stories

Your feed is the homepage your followers see. Stories are the short pieces of content shown at the top of the Instagram window.

The algorithm mainly checks:

  • How relevant your content is for your followers
  • How much interaction your post receives

Interaction means: likes, views, comments, saving the post or sharing it.
The more interaction, the more visible your post becomes.

Your goal: Post content that matches your target group. Ask yourself simple questions such as:

  • What interests potential property owners?
  • What questions do prospective buyers have?
  • What tips can you give on a daily basis?

2. Algorithm for Explore

The Explore area is the discovery page. Users see content from accounts they do not know.

Here the main factor is: Is the content interesting and relevant for many people?
Instagram recognises this by looking at which content users have previously liked or viewed.

3. Algorithm for Reels

Reels are Instagram’s short video clips.
Here too: Entertainment and a clear message are essential.
Reels that perform well usually achieve:

  • a simple message
  • a clear benefit
  • emotions or surprises

Task for you

Review your previous posts:

  • Which posts received many likes, views or comments?
  • Which content fits your target group particularly well?

Consider how you can create such content more frequently.

BOTTIMMO expert tips for more reach

1. Interact with other accounts

Like, comment on and share posts from other users.
This shows Instagram that you are active – and it brings new visitors to your profile.

2. Use suitable hashtags (#)

A hashtag is a keyword that begins with the symbol #.
Instagram uses it to categorise content. Users can even subscribe to hashtags.

How to use hashtags correctly

  • Only use hashtags that really match the content.
  • Choose hashtags with at least 5,000 and no more than 500,000 posts.
This gives you a realistic chance of being seen.
  • Use fewer but more relevant hashtags.
